'Corporate Angst' Can Generate Gaffes That Turn Off Coveted Candidates
by Julie Bennet
In an attempt to bond, a white corporate recruiter recently tapped an African American job candidate on the shoulder and gave him a high-five sign.
The candidate, a high performer, was not amused and did not accept the position.
Such gaffes are an unneccessary byproduct of diversity recruiting, says Kenneth Arroyo Roldan, CEO of Wesley, Brown & Bartle, a New Yor-based retained executive search firm that specializes in diversity. As more minorities are moving into the mainsteam, some are encountering what Mr. Roldan calls " corporate angst." Interviews aren't used to dealing with someone with different skin color or from a different ethnic background, and they go over board trying to make the candidate feel comfortable, he says.
